Roasted Corn and Shrimp Salad

I made my normal three dishes (I had meant to do four but ran out of time, you know how it is) this Wednesday night and plan to post recipes for all of them on the site. However, one of them was a much bigger success than the others, so I wanted to add it [...]

King Corn

What happens when two city kids (Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis) straight out of college decide to find out where their food comes from? Well, first they find out that most food in America is derived from corn. Then they decide to (of course) move to Iowa and grow an acre of corn. Then they [...]

One Local Summer

What am I doing this summer?  Joining the One Local Summer Challenge, of course.  While looking around the world wide web for like minded bloggers I discovered a site called Pocket Farm.  It was a serendipitous day because my discovery of the site happened to fall on the same day that folks were singing up [...]

Tomatoes in Summer

I admit it, I’ve been cheating. As I’m sure some of you noticed, I started eating tomatoes early this year.  They were local tomatoes, but they were grown in green houses rather than outdoors.  I tried to resist until mid June but the temptation of those plump, red globes was more than I could withstand.  [...]

Wednesday Night Hysterics

You know how people say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result? Well, you can call me crazy. For example: My father loves to tell the story of my failed angel food cakes. It’s been over ten years since that disastrous winter when I [...]

How to Find a New Apartment in 30 Days

Have I mentioned that Nick and I are moving? Because we are. And it’s sad. When I first came back to Greensboro after doing hurricane work in Key West I crashed on people’s couches for two weeks while searching for the perfect nest for two young lovebirds. After about 30 apartments I began to despair. [...]

Zucchini Night

This Wednesday was zucchini night. Anyone who has ever had a summer garden knows about zucchini. At first they are such a joy, the most successful produce of all those you planted (or if you are Cam they will be the only plant to even sprout). But then they continue to grow and grow until [...]

Vacation for Jam, eh?

My boss is threatening me.  Unless I bring him a jar or strawberry preserves then I will no longer be allowed to use vacation days that I don’t have.  Not one to compromise my cooking integrity, I’ve refused.  No strawberry preserves for him!  He’ll be getting blackberry preserves in July instead.

Strawberry Season Ending? Let’s Make Some Jam!

Ever made jam before? Until last week I hadn’t either. I’d never even considered making jam before. Making jam is something that cutely old fashioned grandmothers do, not twenty-something professionals with laptops and ipods. I guess what I’m really saying is that preserving is a lost art, delegated to the realms of the elderly. Why [...]

Eating ferns in Massachusetts

My family has a tradition. When my dad and I go to visit my grandparents in summer the four of us pile into a car, drive to Maine, and buy some lobsters. Then, depending on the season, we either hit up a roadside stand for fresh ears of corn or we stop at a grocery [...]
